Our University is launching two new engagement programmes for sustainability today - Team Actions and LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework)
Team Actions and LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework) are open to all University staff to take action on sustainability in offices, laboratories and workshops.
Team Actions is our new programme for staff to take action on sustainability through the award-winning 10,000 Actions portal. This builds on 10 years of engagement with staff who have implemented sustainable actions in their workplace. The new web portal allows you to take collective action with colleagues on sustainability to contribute to the different themes of sustainability, including our targets to be zero carbon by 2038 and avoidable single-use plastic free by 2022.
LEAF is a framework containing a set of criteria aimed at improving the sustainability and efficiency of research and teaching laboratory spaces. Such spaces include typical wet laboratories, science teaching spaces, and IT research laboratories. Crucially, it seeks to produce comparable data on efficiency and sustainability, through the use of in-tool calculators.
Both schemes encourage sharing good practice and celebrate the achievements of teams and individuals at an awards ceremony at the end of the program.
Nalin Thakkar, the University’s Vice-President for Social Responsibility says: “Team Actions and LEAF present fantastic opportunities to engage in programmes which both help us become a more sustainable institution, and reward participants for their efforts. They encourage a sense of collaboration by bringing together colleagues from different teams within our buildings and by forging stronger links between students and staff.”
