Valuing staff on fixed term contracts
09 Dec 2019
A message from our President and Vice-Chancellor, Nancy Rothwell
In my message to the University last week I tried to address the concerns expressed by a number of students who have written to me who felt that most of our academic staff are on fixed-term contracts.
This is not the case, as I hope I explained. But having listened to feedback, I recognise and apologise for the fact that I did not clearly state the value and importance of staff on fixed-term contracts who deliver great value to our teaching and research; and their inevitable concerns about their future careers.
I gave the overall University picture, but did not reflect the fact that the pattern of employment contracts varies considerably across the University. In some areas fixed-term contracts are much more necessary than in the University as a whole.
