Pioneering staff and student safety app enters testing

28 Nov 2019

A pioneering personal protection and security app has entered testing with a small group of students, ahead of a wider launch in early 2020.

Mobile phone with SafeZone application open

SafeZone, a free app launching through our Student Experience Programme, connects students and staff to the University of Manchester Security Team at the touch of a button. Within seconds Security receive an alert alongside the student or staff members’ live GPS location.

The app, which will be available for free on iPhone and Android devices, can be used by students and staff to quickly and discreetly request urgent help, first aid or to report an emergency.

Another major benefit is the underlying security infrastructure that the roll out of SafeZone will bring. A new GPS-based command and control platform has been installed at Security Headquarters, enabling rapid response when alerts are raised. The platform also provides the University with the ability to send push notifications in the event of an emergency or critical incident.

Once testing has completed in early 2020, SafeZone will be available to all students and staff, with ‘SafeZones’ covering, initially, the Oxford Road, Sackville Street, Fallowfield and Victoria Park campuses, as well as all University Halls of Residence.
