Our University’s Widening Participation annual report 2018/19 is now online, demonstrating our commitment to improving outcomes for students from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education – and revealing the impact of the work that we do.
Widening Participation (WP) is key to our goal of social responsibility and firmly embedded into how we run our institution. We believe there should be no barriers to studying and no boundaries to learning.

Our work has been recognised, with our Diversity Champions Manchester winning the Equalities category of this year’s Spirit of Manchester Awards. The project, established after the surge in hate crimes which followed the Manchester Arena attack, seeks to improve awareness of hate crime among young people and give them the skills they need to tackle it in their community.
Our School Governor Initiative – now boasting 1,000 staff and alumni volunteers – also won a Spirit of Manchester Award for Best Employee Volunteering.
And we have been awarded University of Sanctuary status by the Cities of Sanctuary initiative for our inclusive approach to welcoming asylum seekers and refugees.
But the most important commendations come from the communities we’re helping and the youngsters we’re inspiring:
