Changes to Windows Remote Desktop

19 Nov 2019

To help us keep the University network secure, IT Services have made a change which affects the way that some colleagues connect to their computer remotely.

Anyone who wants to use Windows Remote Desktop to connect to their computer from off-campus, needs to have the GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network (VPN) software installed on the computer or mobile device they are using remotely.

For example, if you use your own personal laptop at home to remotely connect to your University desktop computer, you will need to install GlobalProtect VPN on your own laptop.

If the computer or mobile device you are using remotely already has GlobalProtect installed (for example, if you use it to read your email in Outlook or access network storage), you do not need to take any further action.

However, if you do not have GlobalProtect installed, you will need to install it if you want to carry on using Remote Desktop.

As you will probably be aware, GlobalProtect VPN uses Duo for 2-factor authentication, so you will need to authenticate using the Duo mobile app, SMS message or Duo key fob when logging in to GlobalProtect.
