Apprentices in FSE mean business
25 Oct 2019
The Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) welcomes the latest cohort of Business and Administration Apprentices who have embarked on a 12 month placement
The 2019 intake comprises six apprentices, four of whom will be based in one on FSE’s nine Departments while the other two will be based in the Faculty Office and in BP-ICAM.
The Department of Computer Science been a strong supporter of the programme since it commenced and this year welcomes Natalie Ackers who is currently working alongside Thomas Shepard, a previous apprentice who has been asked to stay on for a few months to provide some extra cover.
Natalie said “During my short time at The University of Manchester I have already learnt so much about the world of administration. At the start I was nervous, but very excited about starting my new career.”
The apprentices will be based in professional services teams, giving them the opportunity to learn first-hand from their peers. Natalie commented that “Everyone was so welcoming when I arrived and helped me to settle in. I feel that this apprenticeship will be of great benefit for my future as the University has so much to offer. I am always learning and developing new skills and meeting new people.”
Tom added “the apprenticeship scheme is a brilliant pathway for those who are interested in working in business administration as it enables people of all ages to gain first-hand experience of working in this type of job role on a daily basis.”
“I have learnt many skills which I believe will give me an advantage in my career. During the apprenticeship you are always learning new things and being encouraged to make the most of the benefits that are available, such as learning and development opportunities designed to enhance your experience and knowledge.”
Many colleagues across the Faculty of Science and Engineering comment on the hard work and commitment of the apprentices and as a result of this commitment many of the apprentices go on to secure permanent posts within the University. The Business Administration Apprentice programme is coordinated by Adrian Parker and Lynn Howarth.
