REF case author workshop provides insight into review process

Case authors were invited to an event to learn more about what makes a strong impact case in the eyes of the Research Excellence Framework

Case authors were invited to an event yesterday (Wednesday, 16 October) to learn more about what makes a strong impact case in the eyes of the Research Excellence Framework (REF). With the REF deadline on the horizon, the half-day impact workshop provided case authors with a valuable insight into how REF panel members will review their cases.

The event began with an introduction from FSE’s Dean, Martin Schröder, ahead of a question and answer session with REF panel members Professors Wendy Flavell, Sabine Flitsch and Adisa Azapagic. They provided a unique insight into how they approach reviewing cases and what positive impact looks like, in addition to how they go about grading cases.

Case authors also had the chance to participate in a pair of 45-minute REF subject sessions, which included spending time developing a plan for evidencing their impact case. The event, which took place in the Bell Burnell lecture theatre, concluded with lunch and the opportunity to network with colleagues.

Dr Darren Clement, an Impact Officer at FSE, said: “The workshop provided authors with guidance on presenting their cases in such a way that REF review panel members instantly get a sense of what their case is all about, and how it has had impact beyond academia.”
