Celebrating 100 years of University sport
16 Oct 2019
Our University is delighted to be hosting a reception event and panel to celebrate 100 years of University sport
As a member of staff, we would like to invite you to be a part of it on Thursday, 31 October 2019, from 5pm-7.30pm in the Whitworth Hall.
In 2019, University sport is celebrating its centenary year in the United Kingdom. It was in March 1919 that the Inter-varsity Athletics Board of England and Wales, consisting of 11 founding members including The University of Manchester, met to formalise the first ever track and field event which was then held in May of that year at the University's Fallowfield campus. Since then, University sport nationally has grown to include events and competitions in over 50 sports, with hundreds of thousands of students engaged each year in sport and physical activity.
With thousands of alumni contributing to the University of Manchester Athletic Union, we want to ensure that this is a celebration for everyone and hope that as many current and former students & staff can be represented at the event.
This event will provide an excellent opportunity to meet with other people from the University past and present, to celebrate the achievements of our students through sport over the past century.
Guests will also hear from special sporting representatives including the Head of Sport and Active Lifestyles Vicky Ackerley, and Vince Mayne CEO of BUCS (British Universities and Colleges Sport), followed by a buffet dinner and drinks reception, and a panel discussion.
To book onto this event please register for free via Eventbrite by Friday, 18 October.
