Strolling for Maggie’s Cancer Centre
08 Oct 2019
Recently a number of the University MCRStrollers took part in a fundraising event for Maggie’s Cancer Centre in Manchester.
On the 27th September MCR University staff: Gill Howarth (Optometry), Hawys Williams (Social Responsibility) and Vanessa Cowan (Benefits and Wellbeing) completed the annual Maggie’s Culture Crawl. This is an annual fundraiser where participants walk to interesting buildings, experience live entertainment and food along the 10km route. Yet again the Whitworth Art Gallery opened their doors to support this event along with the Royal Northern College of Music, MOSI and other venues across Manchester. A number of the walkers on the night had cancer, were recovering from cancer or were walking in memory of loved ones.
This year the MCRStrollers raised £465, which combined with the last three previous years, means they have raised over £2,500 to help Maggie’s continue their work.
Maggie’s is opposite The Christie and offers free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their families and friends. As Hawys Williams said, “Having visited on a number of times we know how much support visitors receive from the caring staff and volunteers. We all want to say thank you to everyone who wished us well or helped sponsor us.”
