Brilliant and Black presents: Professor David Olusoga OBE

23 Sep 2019

Public lecture given by our Professor of Public History to celebrate Black History Month at the University

Brilliant and Black presents Professor David Olusoga

October is Black History Month (BHM). This national celebration aims to promote and celebrate Black contributions to British society, and to foster an understanding of Black history in general.

We host many events throughout the University to mark BHM and celebrate Black achievement and for our flagship event this year we are delighted to welcome our Professor of Public History, David Olusoga OBE. David will be delivering a keynote presentation considering the joint histories and shared pasts between Britain and people of African descent.

David, who presented the BBC's landmark series Civilisations in 2018 alongside Simon Schama and Mary Beard, is one of the UK’s foremost historians whose main subject areas are empire, race and slavery. He was made an OBE in 2019 for his services to history and community integration and joined the University earlier this year.

The celebration event will be accompanied by Manchester based musicians Jali and Don Hartley with opportunities for networking and hearing more about relevant work and initiatives at the University.

This free event is for all our staff, students and members of the general public and will take place at the Student’s Union on Thursday, 10 October 2019 from noon.
