Improving support on export control

Updated Frequently Asked Questions published
New and improved Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) are now available to clarify aspects of Export Control and help staff meet legal requirements.
The revised FAQs are based on issues and scenarios that have been raised by staff since the launch of online training to support the University’s Export Control Policy. These include a specific question about the submission and publication of articles containing controlled data, based on clarification provided by the Government’s Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU).
The Export Controls Compliance Project Team is experiencing an increase in the number of enquiries, with more than 3,500 staff having completed the online training module. The team is currently being strengthened so that it can better respond to requests for support and advice.
David Barker, Director of Compliance and Risk said: “We recognise that Export Control requirements are often complex and the revised FAQs are the first stage of work to develop the guidance available. A wider review of the structure and content of the Export Control website is also planned to make it easier to find information.”
The University’s Export Control Policy is in place to ensure all staff and students comply with Export Control legislation and are also aware that they can be held legally responsible for non-compliance.
Export Controls are implemented by the UK and other countries to regulate the transfer of certain items across borders. These include: technology, including ideas and data; physical objects and software.
Controls can relate to concerns related to national security; concerns about the potential use of goods and technology for human rights violations, and requirements brought about by foreign policy considerations and international treaties. You can find out more by taking the online course.
