Annual national pay award 2019-2020
28 Aug 2019
University of Manchester staff to receive base pay increase of between 1.8% and 3.65%
Our University aims to provide an attractive pay and benefits package to our staff which also maintains our financial sustainability.
The national negotiations carried out by the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), representing Manchester and 145 other institutions, on the 2019-2020 base pay increases have now concluded.
We can announce that we will be implementing increases of between 1.8% and 3.65% backdated to 1 August 2019.
Your revised rate of pay, along with any arrears, will be paid in the September 2019 salary instalment.
Updated pay scales can be found on StaffNet:
The latest increase will go alongside the additional annual incremental uplift (which 50% of colleagues receive as part of their progression within grade).
The combination of national pay awards and annual increments is such that average pay increases (excluding promotions) this year is above inflation and has also been above inflation over the past five and ten year periods.
Pay is only part of the investment we make, alongside a wide-ranging package of benefits such as pensions schemes, wellbeing services, training and development and a generous annual leave allowance.
We are also now accredited by the Living Wage Foundation, which officially recognises our long-standing commitment to pay all employees a minimum of £9 per hour.
The University is aware that trades unions are dissatisfied with the outcome of the negotiations with UCEA, but we believe this increase, which with annual increments is above inflation, is a generous and fair one, and recognises the importance we place on providing staff with great pay and terms and conditions.
We know that our staff are our very best asset and the University is committed to ensuring an attractive pay and benefits package is in place.
