Why taking on a Technical Apprentice benefits our University research labs

Find out first-hand the benefits of taking on an apprentice at the University

At The University of Manchester we offer a unique Technical Apprenticeship Programme that allows aspiring young people to get first-hand experience working in their chosen profession, some of which include Science, Engineering, Electronic, Computer Aided design and many more.

The Technical Apprenticeship Programme is designed to give our apprentices as much experience as possible from the vast variety of areas and skilled staff we have available at the University. All apprentices are put on rotations, spending 3 months in one area before moving on to another part of the University. These include Microbiology labs, Virology labs, Material Science labs, Chemistry labs, Workshops in Graphene, GEIC, EEE, PSI and many more exciting opportunities in the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health.

Not only does this allow our apprentices to gain a huge wealth of experience and skills working in different  environments, it also allows colleagues at the University the opportunity to help support the next generation of skilled technicians - many of whom end up working alongside our technical staff in University areas upon completing the programme!

In a recent interview we spoke with Sally Mosley, Technical Operations Manager in FBMH and Raianne Wallworth, Technical Apprentice and now Biobank Technician, about their experiences of the Technical Apprenticeship programme from two perspectives. Sally gives us her point of view of the programme and the benefits of taking on an apprentice at the University and Raianne shares her experiences of the programme as an apprentice, and what doors the programme has opened up for her.
