University joins the Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse

20 Jun 2019

Enabling employers to support employees facing domestic abuse and to help employees who are perpetrators to stop

The University is pleased to confirm that it has joined the Employers Initiative on Domestic Abuse – a network of employers who are working collectively to end domestic abuse.

One in four women and one in six men will experience domestic violence or abuse at some point in their lifetime. It is therefore very likely that all workplaces, including the University, will have staff that have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can take many forms, including violence, abuse or threatening behaviour between adults who are, or have been, partners or family members.  Abuse can be physical, psychological, emotional, sexual, verbal or financial.  Domestic abuse can happen to anyone.

When organisations demonstrate that they are aware of domestic abuse and make their staff aware of the services that are available, this can help to reduce the wall of silence about domestic abuse that prevents many from seeking help.  Through working with the EIDA we hope to play a role in tackling the issue of domestic abuse.

You can find our resources on domestic abuse on StaffNet, including information for concerned colleagues and managers.  Our guidance outlines how we will support employees experiencing domestic abuse.   This year we have also provided training to a number of HR staff, Wellbeing Champions and Harassment Support Advisors in providing support to staff experiencing abuse.
