Success at the Three Minute Thesis Competition

An 80,000 word thesis would take nine hours to present – their time limit…three minutes!

Ismaeel Ramzan was declared the winner of our Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition with his talk entitled ‘Making Science Cheaper Using Machine Learning’.

The competition challenges PhD students to present a compelling spoken presentation of their research topic and its significance in just three minutes.

Over 50 applicants from across the University battled their way through the heats. Ten made it to the final and one winner emerged.

The event was judged by Professor Sheena Cruickshank (Professor in Public Engagement and Biomedical Science), Dr Ceri Harrop (Public Programme Manager – School of Biological Science) and Tim Hudson (Research Engagement Manager – Cancer Research UK).

They were all impressed with the research and talent on show, with Ceri declaring: “It’s great to see such a high standard of talks and hear researchers with such palpable enthusiasm for their subjects.”

Ismaeel, a PhD student in the School of Chemical Engineering and Analytical Science, took home the £500 first prize.

James Mason, from the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, took home both the Runner Up prize of £100 and the Audience vote prize with his talk ‘Battling Climate Change: Sat Navs for Sailing Ships.’

Ismaeel will now be entered into the Vitae-hosted UK online Semi Final with a chance of a place in the UK final in September. Good luck Ismaeel!
