Contemporary Chinese Culture through Performing Arts
13 May 2019
Come and explore the current British perception about Chinese culture
Concert pianist, composer, theatre and artistic director of Chinese Arts Now (CAN) An-Ting Chang will give a talk exploring the current British perception about Chinese culture.
The talk – on Thursday, 16 May from 6pm to 7pm at Central Library, St Peter's Square, Manchester – will also discuss how different art forms and works might help to raise public understanding and appreciation of contemporary Chinese perspectives.
The first Chinese Arts Now (CAN) Festival took place earlier this year and celebrated and promoted artists of Chinese extraction in the UK, both those born in Britain and those from the wider Chinese diaspora.
More than 60 high-quality events took place throughout London showcasing a diverse range of art forms, presenting contemporary British-Chinese stories and new works that fuse Chinese heritage and European culture in innovative ways.
An-Ting says: "There are great Chinese traditions, but I think there is a gap in showing contemporary Chinese culture. We don't live in a time where we just perform lion dances, we have contemporary theatre, new music, and we have innovative artists."
In addition to solo and chamber recitals, she is seeking new and creative approaches to combine her concerts with different media.
