Our Hospitality and Events Team accelerates action to tackle plastic waste

08 May 2019

Now we’re one of the first universities in the country to use 100% plastic-free packing for delivered platters

Our University’s Hospitality and Events team has already made a pledge to Mayor Andy Burnham’s drive to see Greater Manchester single use and plastic free by 2020.

But their latest move sees the innovative team be the one of the first universities in the country to use 100% plastic free packing for delivered platters, through the University’s in house catering team Taste Manchester.

The new range, which launches today, is just the latest in a number of initiatives that the team have employed to be more sustainable including:

  • The introduction of ecoffee cups across campus
  • A discount of 25p on hot drinks for using your own/reusable mug
  • Plastic-free sandwich packaging
  • Vegware cups and cutlery (made from plants not plastic)
  • All waste food is collected for charity where possible.

Alison Shedlock, Head of Hospitality and Events, said “We are thrilled to be one of the first universities in the country to lead the way in plastic-free packaging for the majority of our delivered catering. We have worked hand-in-hand with our supplier over the past 12 months to once again be at the forefront of innovation in university catering whilst continuing to support the wider University goal of social responsibility.”
