Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS) is creating a number of videos in which staff and students are interviewed on their experiences working and studying within the school, as well as their thoughts on Manchester in general. The aim is not only to show what it is like to learn and teach at AMBS, but also to emphasise the importance of teaching excellence within the school and to explain what this means to both academics and students.

For the first of these videos, AMBS spoke to a number of academics who teach undergraduate students about teaching excellence, and what it means to them personally. For example: “Teaching excellence for me means being able to stoke a student’s curiosity, such that they are motivated to go away and explore and learn for themselves.” – Dr Paul Simpson, Lecturer Accounting and Finance.

From there, the academics interviewed go on to discuss the various ways they bring teaching excellence to their students, be it through real-world interactions or creating a relaxed and happy learning environment:

“I enjoy bringing lots of different case studies into my teaching. I also enjoy bringing in real life things – we get employers in and we go out to visit employers, we have a trip down to London next week to Chartered Accountants Hall. So it’s really trying to expose our students to the real word.” – Jenni Rose, Lecturer in Accounting and Finance.

“The use of humour really works. When you’re using humour in your lectures, the students tend to be more focused and [more] relaxed as well.” – Dr Javed Siddiqui, Senior Lecturer in Accounting and Finance.

The subsequent releases will see students interviewed on their experiences in AMBS, discussing teaching quality and memorable teaching experiences, as well as explaining what makes Manchester special to them.
