Celebrate women in sport as part of International Women's Day

06 Mar 2019

We are pleased to invite you to join us for a special reception and panel discussion on Tuesday, 12 March to celebrate International Women’s Day

Women in sport

Our event this year will focus on women in sport.

Sport is one of the most powerful platforms for promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls.

Women are far more visible in sports today than at any previous point in history but there is still a long way to go.

1.5 million more men play sport than women each week and only 8% of girls are meeting recommended exercise guidelines.

Key leadership positions in global sport governance and management remain largely elusive for women.

While the gender prize money gap in sport is closing with more sports than ever achieving parity at the top level, the visibility of women’s sport across all forms of media is far less than men’s and fewer sports are covered.

These concerns – as well as other wide ranging issues – will be considered by our expert panel of:

  • Vicky Ackerley, Head of Sport and Active Lifestyles, The University of Manchester;
  • Rowena Birch (BSc Electronic and Electrical Engineering 1991), High Performance Sports Consultant and former European judo champion;
  • Clare Briegal (MBA 1993), Chief Executive Officer, International Netball Federation;
  • Grace Harvey (second-year Biology student, The University of Manchester), para swimmer

The event will take place in the Whitworth Hall and will commence with refreshments at 6pm and discussions at 6.30pm. A drinks and canapés reception will follow and the evening will close at 8.45pm.
