Have you ever experienced or witnessed racism whilst at University?

The Equality and Human Rights Commission want to hear from all students and staff who have experienced, witnessed or helped in an incident of racial harassment whilst either studying or working in higher education

Racial harassment is any unwanted behaviour directed at a person because of their race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) ethnic or national origins, with the purpose of violating a person’s dignity, or creating a degrading, humiliating, hostile, intimidating or offensive environment.

It can present in many forms. It can be spoken or written words or images either online or in person. It can be a facial expression or a physical gesture. It can be banter or jokes that are offensive to you.

Patrick Johnson, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion said: "We believe that everyone has the right to live, work and study in an environment free from the fear of harassment or violence. I urge anyone who has experienced, witnessed or helped in an incident of racial harassment in Higher Education to complete the survey."

Speak Up! Stand Up!

The ‘Speak Up! Stand Up!’ Campaign is being led by the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Team working in collaboration with the University of Manchester Students' Union. It aims to empower people to be an active bystander and take action against harassment, hate crime and sexual violence.

Report and support

If you or someone you know has experienced problematic behaviour you can use the University’s Report and Support Platform. This allows you to report something anonymously or report it and get support from a Harassment Support Advisor.
