Exploring Student Retention Workshop

Workshop developed by the Higher Education Academy will consider strengthening and reinforcing a sense of belonging to support student retention

All staff with an interest in supporting student retention are invited to attend a one-day workshop developed by the Higher Education Academy that looks to address the area of retention by strengthening and reinforcing a sense of belonging among students.

The workshop will take place on Thursday, 22 November from 9am-3.45pm in the Renold Building.

The workshop will consider the following topics:

  • ways of embedding equality and diversity within policy and practice to increase retention and engagement, enriching learning and teaching in the process.
  • developing the curricula to draw on students’ life experiences, their interests and backgrounds, again with the ultimate goal of engaging students and enhancing retention.
  • a range of practices to support retention within all disciplines, for instance through active learning, ongoing induction and even pre-arrival and post-arrival strategies. 
  • a range of other options regarding retention such as the development of supportive learning environments where all members of the learning and teaching community feel they are safe, that they belong, and are able to challenge and change the attitudes and practices that can undermine inclusion and consequently student retention.

This workshop is funded by an Investing in Success grant and is delivered by Advance HE Academic Leads for Retention.

The issue of student retention and its personal, social and economic consequences is of critical importance to the modern higher education sector. When students drop out it can cost them lost time, money and confidence. It also affects university finances, reputation and planning.
