The University is re-launching the Dementia Friends initiative
Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society’s initiative and one of the University's Social Responsibility flagship programmes. The Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia.
Currently, over 800,000 people live with dementia in the UK and this number is set to double in the next 30 years. Whilst affecting all of the UK, current Department of Health data indicate the highest rates of dementia are in the North West region.
Some dementia facts:
- One in three people over 65 will die with dementia.
- There are over 17,000 people under 65 with dementia in the UK.
- Symptoms of dementia include memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. Dementia is a terminal condition.
To date 2.6 million people have attended the 50 minute information session which aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about the condition.
Would you like to spend 50 minutes over a lunch time to become a dementia friend? The University of Manchester is holding Dementia Friends sessions in the Staff Learning and Development department (located on main campus) and you can request to attend one of these sessions.
