Policy@Manchester updates blogging guidelines

09 Nov 2018

The changes will support contributors to prepare the most effective blogs for their audiences.

The Policy@Manchester team has updated its guidelines for colleagues who write policy-related blogs, designed to help ensure that blogs form part of a coordinated approach to engaging and influencing public policy.

Authors will now be asked to talk with the team before they prepare a blog, to discuss matters such as policy objectives, the research base, structure and style, relevant public policy angles, and optimal publication date. This new approach is designed to make the writing process more straight forward, with less time being spent editing submissions both for the author and Policy@Manchester team.

The team has also clarified its policy on requirements for external contributions from non-academics, and its process of ‘referring upwards’ regarding editorial decision.

The Policy@Manchester team said: “We appreciate this is a change to a long-standing way of working, but we believe it is necessary to make these changes to ensure we can continue to support and ensure meaningful and effective policy engagement for colleagues across all our Faculties. We also believe it will ultimately save time and frustration for colleagues who spend valuable time writing a blog, but which ultimately needs a lot of changes to render it suitable for our platform and to bring it in line with our editorial guidelines and requirements.”

The team regularly review its blogging guidelines.
