First child-led exhibition opens at the Whitworth
19 Oct 2018
'We Are 11' is an exhibition curated by 11 year olds from Stanley Grove Primary Academy
It tells a story of what it means to be a child today both in Manchester and on a global scale. Since March 2018, schoolchildren have worked with learning, curatorial and conservation teams to pick artworks from the Whitworth’s collections to represent themes relating to family and friends, fun and entertainment, school, worries, fears and hopes and dreams.
It helps provide a fascinating insight into today’s child and has opened up dialogue and discussion around the things that matter most to them.
The exhibition is a first for the gallery. A child-led show featuring illustrations for labels, an interpretation of a modern ‘Hannah Smith’s casket’ – (an embroidered casket designed by an 11 year old back in the 1640’s) and a specially-commissioned Whitworth Minecraft – virtual gallery game.
The exhibition runs until 27 January 2019.
