Local foodbank urgently needs help

09 Oct 2018

Emmeline’s Pantry is a local foodbank for vulnerable women and their families

Wellbeing

They were recently flooded due to extreme weather, but reopened quickly to make sure all their families who use their service are cared for. As they have 26 charities referring women and their families to them they are continually reliant on donations.

Some of these women have escaped domestic abuse and had to leave all their family belongings behind, some have escaped traffickers in this area and others have been impacted by the delays in benefits.

Items always needed include:

  • Tea & Coffee
  • Tinned fruit, vegetables, baked beans, meats and fish
  • Biscuits/Crisps (treats for families)
  • Toiletries for mums, babies & children
  • Nappies (all sizes)
  • Clothes detergent
  • All longlife, storable food

It is now the Emmeline’s Christmas Appeal where they are focussing on donations of new toiletry gift sets, new pyjama sets for women, selection boxes, new toys and gifts for women and teenagers to give something to the mums and their families.

Christmas is a difficult time for families in poverty. The reality of austerity for local families is mums restricting their food intake to make sure their children have more, not being able to afford sanitary products for themselves and their daughters, and having to use tea towels as nappies for their babies.

How you can help

A number of staff have created drop off locations across campus for donations. Some departments have a giant donation box and staff buy one extra item a week to add to the collection.  It soon makes a massive difference!

Emmeline’s Pantry will be attending the Staff Wellbeing Fair on 30 October in Whitworth Hall, from 12pm until 2pm. They are hoping staff can bring along donations to their Christmas appeal.
