World Mental Health Day

09 Oct 2018

This year’s theme is young people and mental health in a changing world – staff Well-being gives you the information

The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October every year.

This year's theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is young people and mental health in a changing world. Suicide and substance abuse numbers have been steadily rising and LGBTQ youth are feeling alone and persecuted for being true to themselves. Young adults are at the age when serious mental illnesses can occur and yet they are taught little to nothing about mental health care.

Ahead of World Mental Health Day the Mental Health First Aid organisation has launched a toolkit to support young people with their mental health. This includes Tips for Talking to Young People that can be of help to those working with students and for parents who may have children struggling with their mental health.

Mental health problems can affect anyone, so it’s so important to look after your own wellbeing too. MIND has a useful support page for World Mental Health Day with tips on staying well and a video which explains what mental health problems are and how they can affect us.

Whether you're concerned about yourself or a loved one, these national helplines can offer expert advice. You can also reach out to your GP or the University’s Counselling Service.
