WATCH: Our amazing Sustainability Challenge 2018

25 Sep 2018

8,000 students, 9 buildings, 1 day – welcome to Manchester

Sustainability Challenge

On Tuesday, 18 September all 8,000 first year undergraduates were invited to take part in the Sustainability Challenge. The event was delivered with the help of hundreds of University staff.

Students worked in interdisciplinary groups in over 100 classrooms across 9 buildings to develop a new campus for the fictitious University of Millchester. They had to incorporate factors such as costs and energy efficiency, while considering the needs of the local community and wider society.

The Sustainability Challenge forms part of the University’s signature Ethical Grand Challenges programme, which engages undergraduates with key global issues. Students will move onto exploring Social Justice in their second year and Workplace Ethics in their third and final years.

The Ethical Grand Challenges are part of Stellify, which encourages students to broaden their horizons, understand the issues that matter, and step up to make a difference to the local and global community. The Sustainability Challenge is the first step towards achieving the Stellify Award, the University’s most prestigious extra-curricular award.
