Casken Stolen Airs for Cello and Piano (first performance)
Shebalin Quartet No. 5 in F minor, Op. 33 (‘Slavonic’)
The first performance of a piece by the University’s Professor emeritus, John Casken, derived from his opera-in-progress Sylvie and the Songman, precedes the Stalin-Prize-winning Fifth Quartet of Shostakovich’s friend and colleague, Vissarion Shebalin, composed in the early years of the Great Patriotic War and in the spirit of national affirmation.
