An evening not to be missed at Manchester Museum and the Whitworth

07 Sep 2018

Keep Thursday 20 September free in your diary for two events at the Whitworth and Manchester Museum

Ancient Worlds galleries

At Manchester Museum from 6-10pm, free

Manchester Museum will be hosting 'It’s a Wrap' - a celebration to say goodbye to its Ancient Worlds galleries. Come along and enjoy an evening of music, poetry and performance.

Hear the hieroglyphs, handle never-before-seen objects and join Manchester Museum in raising a farewell toast to the its much loved Ancient Egypt gallery, reopening in 2021 following its exciting £13 million Hello Future project, making it more inclusive, imaginative and relevant to the diverse communities it serves. During this time the museum will remain open, however its Ancient Worlds galleries will close on the 1st of October until early 2021 in order to keep displayed collections safe while extensive building work takes place.

At the Whitworth from 6-8pm, free, no need to book

The Whitworth invites you to preview two exhibitions, 'William Kentridge: Thick Time' and 'Alice Kettle: Thread Bearing Witness'.

South African artist William Kentridge weaves together global histories of revolution, exile and utopian aspirations, exploring how they are shaped by the creative forces of memory and the imagination. Kentridge is renowned for his animated drawings and films that have been exhibited throughout the world since the 1980s.

Alice Kettle: Thread Bearing Witness is a major new series of large textiles, and other works, to be shown at the Whitworth, that considers cultural heritage, refugee displacement and movement, while engaging with individual migrants and their creativity within the wider context of the global refugee crisis.
