Division of Campus Life develops new online resources for staff supporting students with wellbeing and mental health

Students on Oxford Road

Large numbers of colleagues throughout the university are involved in supporting our students – in Schools, Halls and across the campus.

Staff in a whole variety of roles may encounter students in need of support and their response can make a real difference to our students getting the help they need. So it’s vital that we give our staff the tools and knowledge to know how to respond and where to signpost and refer.

To help staff understand what level of support to offer to students and how to signpost or refer to other help, the Division of Campus Life have developed a Stepped Care Model.

This brief eLearning resource takes staff through the different levels of help and support that are available for different levels of student need and severity of problem:

Colleagues in the Division of Campus Life, within the Directorate for the Student Experience are also currently developing a range of online resources to help staff support students.

To see the first of these – covering anxiety, depression, psychosis and risk of suicide or self-harm – visit:

In addition the Counselling Service also offers regular and frequent face-to-face training sessions on responding to student mental health difficulties. To find out more visit:

Further training resources on supporting students are being developed in the coming months. For more information contact the Counselling Service at:
