Courses available for teaching and learning academic development

10 Sep 2018

Enhance your skills with these courses offered by the Staff Learning and Development Unit

Using Your Voice Effectively

This half-day workshop offered by Staff Learning & Development and its small numbers give maximum support. The course imparts simple techniques colleagues can employ to protect their voices and use them more effectively when lecturing or when speaking to large audiences. You will learn how to maintain and deliver a healthy, clear voice and how to create a more ‘listenable’ voice by using pauses, placing emphasis, and considering enunciation.  It is a highly practical course and attendees will participate in activities to develop skills effectively to have a lasting impact.  A pilot session has been run and receive good feedback from academic staff.

Evidencing Excellence in Teaching

Across the university and nationally there are awards where you can demonstrate and evidence your expertise in teaching and learning and enhanced student experience.  On Thursday, 11 October from 12:30 until 2:30 pm a pan-University event will be run where we will explore in more detail these awards looking at award criteria, extracts from successful applications as well as giving support to you in capturing and evidencing your teaching excellence and as a result build your expertise in applying for awards, grants, fellowships and promotion applications. There will be a focus on LEAP fellowship applications, promotions, CHERIL bids, NTF/CATE and Evidencing Externally.  This has been run previously in BMH with great feedback so we are now expanding to include the rest of the University.  Find out more details and how to enrol.

Training on the Revised Promotions Criteria

New Criteria Approved 17 May 2018

Staff Learning & Development are pleased to offer training to assist staff in applying the newly amended University promotions criteria. This session is for people who sit on a Faculty or School Promotions Committee and/or staff who support colleagues going for promotion to help understanding and consistency of application across the University.

The course will take the form of a maximum 2 hour session over a working lunch in the Roscoe Building. Delegates will be able to hear about the new criteria and be able to raise questions. Kersti Börjars, who chaired the working group developing the criteria, and experienced promotions committee members from the Faculties, will be facilitating the event.  If you go to register and the course is full, please register on the waiting list.

Planning for a Teaching Focussed Career at The University of Manchester

This session is aimed at those wanting to pursue a career along the teaching & learning route. It aims to give a good understanding of the promotions criteria relating to the route: ‘Academic:Teaching’ and what activity can be used to support a claim of achievement with respect to each criterion.  The session will be run by Kersti Börjars who chaired the working group to develop the criteria and will be interactive, so there will be an opportunity to discuss the participant’s individual cases. It is for current Academic staff.
