Campus gets high-definition security camera upgrade

27 Jul 2018

The two-year project has seen all external CCTV cameras on the main and some on the north campus updated

The new cameras offer superior functionality with high definition images as standard.  The improved image quality allows security staff to zoom in, capturing extraordinary detail that has never been possible before.  New panoramic cameras have been installed, and the footage can be “stitched” together to give a full, uninterrupted 180-degree view of a particular area.

Security Services, part of the Directorate of Estates and Facilities, worked with IT Services and external contractors Milestone Corp and Stanley Security Solutions on the extensive project.  The partnership with IT Services has ensured that extra data security safeguards are in place along with the safe storage of images off-site.

Head of Security Gary Rowe said: “We know that for our staff, students and their families, safety and security on campus is a top priority.  Investing in new cameras, which are much more intuitive and interactive, demonstrates our commitment to this while giving our security staff the equipment they need to do their jobs effectively.”

Deputy Security Manager Paul Greenlees added: “This system is completely versatile – in the future, for example, we may be able to link access control systems together – so, for instance, when a new building is complete, it can be incorporated into the same system.

“It will even integrate with the body cameras worn by our staff – so they can stream images via Wi-Fi straight to our control room.”

Jiazi Zhuang, Project Manager, Portfolio and Project Support for IT Services said: “We were pleased to be able to collaborate with Security Services on this important camera upgrade project.

“This involved colleagues from IT Services, Security, Estates and business areas and I would like to thank them for their work and input, it was invaluable.”
