An Engineering Night at the Museum

On 9 May the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil engineering hosted “Night at the Museum”, a showcase of Mechanical Engineering projects

For the third year running the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering held a showcase of Mechanical Engineering projects at the Manchester Museum. A Night at the Museum provides an opportunity for students to showcase the innovative products and devices they have brought from concept to reality to an audience of staff, students, friends, family and industry representatives.

Over 20 projects were showcased at the event including a 3D printed prosthetic hand, an indoor cycling trainer and a garden multi-tool for arthritis sufferers. The event was opened with a series of talks including a guest speaker, Alex Richards, who discussed his experience of working for Dyson and encouraged many of the students to apply for the James Dyson Design award.

Dr Carl Diver, who organises the showcase, said “this was a fantastic evening, and our largest to-date with over 200 people, it was great to see parents and grandparents coming along to see what their loved ones have been working on. There was a very strong representation from Industry this year and it appears to be growing year on year, with many of them wishing that they could return to university to be able to work on such wonderful innovative projects.”
