Greg Holmes, Communications Officer tells us about his day to day work and what he enjoys most about working at the University

As part of a campaign to raise awareness of the different types of work our Professional Support Services (PSS) staff do and the valuable contribution they make to the University, we’ll be bringing you a series of staff profiles from across the PSS. This week we spoke to Greg Holmes, Communications Officer for the Alliance Manchester Business School. 

What does your role involve? 

As Communications Officer for the Alliance Manchester Business School, the main part of my job involves creating campaigns and crafting messages for staff to promote the work of the School. In particular, I work with our colleagues to promote good news internally within the School and organise internal engagement events. In addition to the internal communications aspect of my role, I also get involved with media relations, social media and a bit of event management.


What do you like about your job? 

I like the fact that it’s a relatively varied role. I enjoy creative writing and as you would expect in my job, I write news articles for the intranet, newsletters and website as well as content for social media. I also get involved with photographing the new AMBS redevelopment and colleagues who I interview – which I really enjoy.  

I also have the opportunity to meet a lot of people across the University, which is really interesting. It’s great to work in a place that’s centred around learning and self-development. You learn so much from talking to the academics and listening to their extensive subject knowledge. I find this fascinating.  


What do you like about working for the University of Manchester? 

There’s a good collegiate atmosphere here at the University with lots of students around, people are here to learn and it’s an inspiring environment to be a part of.  I also love the campus; it’s a real mix of new and old, with lots of modern architecture being constructed against a backdrop very traditional buildings.
