British Science Week celebration

To celebrate British Science Week the University has opened its doors for primary and second schools to come and experience our research

From robots designed like bees to a real placenta set in glass, primary and secondary schools across Manchester have had chance to get hands-on experience of our research this week. This is all in support of British Science Week which is being celebrated across the country.

The ten day event, that takes place between 9 March and 18 March, is a celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths, featuring entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.

Here at the University we have invited 43 schools to join us at the Sackville Street building to celebrate all of our fantastic STEM research. School students got the chance to get stuck into practical demonstrations in the Great Hall at the science fair. Running alongside this was a number of workshops and lectures aimed at inspiring the next generation of STEM researchers.

The fair had a variety of stands representing research from across the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health. This included demonstrations such as a bunny eared brain scanner, microscopes to show the senses and movement of flies and robots designed on the behaviour of bees.

Students also got the chance to learn more about topics which inform our beacons research, such as cancer and advanced materials. 

The event which takes place every year will be running until Friday 16 March and began on Monday 12 March.
