University recruiting volunteers who are good listeners, able to keep calm and believe most people can resolve their problems
Are you a good listener, non-judgemental, able to keep calm when others lose their head, committed to helping colleagues manage their differences constructively and believe that people can find the solutions to most problems?
Then you could work for the University’s in-house mediation service to help both staff and students deal with a range of issues that they experience through work or study, assisting people in resolving their differences.
Mediation is normally carried out in pairs, with two mediators working together with parties seeking mediation. We are looking for new volunteers from across the University to become internal mediators and support the operation of this important service.
In order to be an effective mediator you will need to be able to demonstrate skills in the following areas:
- Communication – able to build rapport and work constructively with strong emotion.
- Facilitation and impartiality – non-judgemental and able to create a safe environment, working with parties in a balanced way.
- Conflict management – able to use influencing skills, manage challenging behaviour, and remain calm under pressure.
- Personal development – able to reflect on and learn from practice, maintains and develops technical expertise through CPD.
- Self-awareness – high degree of emotional intelligence, aware of own communication styles, impact and potential biases.
- Equality and Diversity – understands how to work appropriately with a wide range of people whilst maintaining their dignity. Is capable of managing power issues and challenges. Understands and challenges discriminatory behaviour and provides a model of fairness and equality.
Mediators are required to act with professionalism, integrity, confidentiality and work to the values of the service and a mediator’s code of conduct. We are seeking a diverse group of mediators, and welcome applications from interested individuals across all roles and grades.

Full accredited training will be provided leading to a recognised qualification in mediation. Joining the mediation network means making a commitment to undertake formal training, and conduct at least two mediations every year, and take part in CPD to keep your skills up to date.

Training to become an internal mediator will involve attending a six day training course in the Roscoe building on:
- Thursday, 5 and Friday, 6 April
- Thursday, 19 and Friday, 20 April
- Tuesday, 1 and Wednesday, 2 May
