World leading Volcanologist to visit the University

Professor Terry A. Plank will be leading a discussion in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences this month

Professor Terry A. Plank, world leader of volcanology at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatroy, will be visiting the University to deliver a talk on Wednesday 21 February. Hosted by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Prof. Plank will be discussing “Volatiles and Volcanic Vigor”.

Professor Plank is an expert in volcanology, geochemistry and igneous petrology. Her research is focused on magmas associated with the plate tectonic cycle, at both divergent and convergent plate margins.

With an impressive career in the field, Professor Plank has served on the MARGINS steering committee, the editorial boards of Geology and Earth & Planetary Science Letters, the EarthScope Advisory Committee, as co-chief scientist on Leg 185 of the Ocean Drilling Program, co-lead-author of the SZ4D Vision Document, and one of the writing team for the NAS ERUPT Report.

Terry Plank received 

-the Houtermans Medal from the European Association for Geochemistry, 

-the Donath Medal from the Geological Society of America,

- is a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union, the Geochemical Society, the Geological Society for America, and the Mineralogical Society of America.

- In 2012 she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, in 2013 elected into the National Academy of Sciences, and in 2016 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

The discussion will be examining both the volatile content and the speed of magma ascent immediately prior to eruption. All seminars will take place from 13:00 to 14.00 in room G.47, Williamson Building, with coffee and tea at 12:30 in the lobby on the first floor of the Williamson Building.
