Macmillan volunteer attends Buckingham Palace reception

Senior Staff Learning & Development Co-ordinator Sally Shelmerdine recently attended a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by HRH The Prince of Wales

Sally was among a number of volunteers who help Macmillan Cancer Support. HRH The Prince of Wales is the charity’s Patron.

The event recognised and thanked exceptional volunteers for their life-changing contributions to helping people living with cancer.

Sally, who has undergone treatment for breast cancer, was a key and long-standing member of the User Involvement Volunteer team on the Macmillan Cancer Improvement Partnership in Manchester.

Sally said: "I had a wonderful time at the HRH Macmillan event in London. It was great to meet other volunteers and senior staff from Macmillan who were singing the praises of all the wonderful work the volunteers have been doing across the country.

"It was very exciting being at Buckingham Palace and waking through the main gates into the centre courtyard. When our group meet HRH Prince Charles he asked us where we were all from and when I explained I was from Lancashire near the Pennines, I don't think he knew where Oldham is. He jokingly commented: 'Oh yes I can tell you are from the North'. I think my accent made a big impression! 

"We were at Buckingham Palace for about 2 hours and we also chatted with Lady Halifax, who is the President of Macmillan Cancer Support."

The reception focused on the contribution Macmillan’s supporters have made, and celebrated the vital role volunteers play at Macmillan.
