Join one of the largest volunteer forces in the country and make a positive contribution to children’s education
With #GivingTuesday (28 November) just around the corner we are celebrating how our staff are making a difference and highlighting just some of the initiatives that you can get involved in to make a difference.
Since 2011 the University has been committed to expanding the number of staff who support local schools and colleges as Governors and to providing a network for such people to share experiences and best practice.
The University’s School Governor Initiative forms an important part of our widening participation strategy and is one of the University’s Social Responsibility Signature Programmes. The range of skills and expertise that colleagues possess across the institution means that University staff are well placed to make a difference in these roles.
Governors have a critical role in raising school standards through supporting and challenging the school’s senior leadership team in order to achieve the best outcomes for all pupils. To support staff in this role, the University has established a supportive and friendly network of 210 members giving access to a wealth of information and resources. As well as freely giving your skills and knowledge to schools, being a school governor helps you develop new skills and provides opportunities for your personal and professional development. Staff also feedback that this is a very rewarding role and helps them feel more connected with the local community where they live or work.
