Ig Nobel Awards comes to Manchester!

The University will host, for the first time, the UK tour of the Ig Nobel Awards
We are guaranteed a light-hearted, fun and somewhat unconventional evening from the team behind Improbable Research, who bring us the annual Ig Nobel awards.
The Ig Nobel Awards are designed to honour academic research that makes people laugh, and then makes them think. The prizes celebrate the unusual, honour the imaginative, and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology.
The UK tour hosts a selection of Ig Nobel winners giving presentations about their areas of research as well as taking questions from a somewhat bemused audience. We are delighted that on this leg of the tour one of the University’s Nobel laureates, Professor Andre Geim, will be presenting.Professor Geim is the first, and thus far only, person in the world to receive both the prestigious science award and its tongue-in-cheek equivalent.
He will be joined by:
- Elisabeth Oberzaucher, who won her Ig Nobel Prize for using mathematical techniques to determine whether and how Moulay Ismael the Bloodthirsty fathered 888 children in 30 years.
- Kees Moeliker, who won his Prize in 2003 for documenting the first scientifically recorded case of homosexual necrophilia in male mallard ducks.
This evening will be compered by Marc Abrahams, editor and co-founder of Annals of Improbable Research, and originator and Master of Ceremonies of the annual Ig Nobel Prize celebration.
The event encourages audience participation so we hope, if it sounds appealing to you, you will feel free to enter into the spirit of a humorous, alternative evening of entertainment.
The event is free of charge and will begin with refreshments at 6pm, with the presentations to commence at 6.30pm. The evening will conclude with a drinks reception.
