Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) is marked annually on 20 November in memory of those who have been killed as a result of transphobia.
Gender reassignment is one of nine protected characteristics covered under the Equality Act – the University ensures that all Trans* staff and students are treated equally and does not tolerate any form of transphobia.
We will be marking TDOR in a number of ways in 2017:
- The flying of the Trans* flag in University Place;
- Publishing updated Guidance for Supporting Trans* staff and students;
- Relaunch of the Gender Neutral toilet campus map;
- Inviting people to become a Trans Ally;
- A special event at St Peter's Chaplaincy ‘An Evening with Rachel Mann’.

Join us for drinks and nibbles before an engaging Q&A session with Rachel followed by an act of remembrance.
Rachel Mann is an Anglican priest and writer based in south Manchester. A former resident poet at Manchester Cathedral, her memoir of growing up transgender Dazzling Darkness was a bestseller. A regular contributor to BBC Radio 2’s Pause for Thought, her latest book Fierce Imaginings: The Great War, Ritual, Memory and God was published in Spring 2017. She writes and speaks extensively about the relationships between gender, sexuality and faith.

We are also pleased to announce a new training session which will be available from January. 'Transfer: A Journey' is specific training centred around trans issues and how we can better support this community at the University. More details will be published once the training is available to book.
*Trans is an umbrella term encompassing all those who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth, including but not limited to those who are transgender, genderqueer, agender and non-binary.
