University cycling community celebrates 10 years of delivering change

UMBUG will be celebrating their 10th anniversary of promoting cycling at the University at the next Corridor monthly cycle event taking place on Wednesday, 4 October

UMBUG are The University of Manchester Bicycle Users’ Group and is proud to have over 1,000 members and growing.

Over the past 10 years, UMBUG has worked with the University to achieve impressive year-on-year increases in the number of staff and students cycling to the University and, coupled with the recent improvements to cycleways along Oxford Road and introduction of a citywide bike hire scheme, there has never been such a bustling corridor of cyclists.

UMBUG members have worked closely with the University’s Environmental Sustainability and Estates teams over the last decade supporting improvements to cycle parking, showering/changing facilities, cycle routes and access to help meet this growing demand.

October’s breakfast is a huge thank you to UMBUG and all the members of the Oxford Road cycling community that have helped develop such a thriving and supportive network over the years.

Councillor Chris Paul, GM Deputy Cycling and Walking Commissioner will attend to join in the celebrations, representing the GM Mayor and his Commissioner, along with Councillor Mandie Shilton-Godwin who is Lead Member for Cycling and Walking for Manchester City Council. Chris is also Transport for Greater Manchester Committee spokesperson for Walking and Cycling.

The occasion will be marked with a group photo at 8:30am.  It will be at EATS Restaurant in University Place.

There will be a free prize draw for all those that attend. Prizes have been kindly donated by the following local independent bike shops: Hillcourt Street Cycles, Harry Hall Cycles and Bicycle Doctor.
