Combatting climate change through our buildings
25 Sep 2017
As we mark World Green Building Week, we look at steps taken to make our campus more sustainable
Here’s some of what we’ve done on campus:
- Living Wall installed on exterior of the Rutherford Theatre, Schuster Building
- Green roofs have been installed on the Whitworth Art Gallery and the National Graphene Institute
- Beehives are maintained by staff at various locations, including the Whitworth Art Gallery and the Rutherford Building
And here are some of the sustainable measures due to be delivered by the Campus Masterplan:
- Over 1,000 cycle spaces planned to encourage staff and students to try more sustainable methods of travel;
- A green roof as part of the MECD campus; and
- A gas Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system to provide low carbon heat and electricity.
World Green Building Week is an annual event that empowers the green building community to deliver green buildings for everyone, everywhere. Buildings can be heroes in the fight against climate change – and so can you. This year it runs from 25 September until 1 October and the focus is to make all buildings net zero by 2050.
