The University of Manchester Distinguished Lecture 2017

18 Sep 2017

Join Professor Tim O’Brien on a journey and see how we came to understand our place in the universe

Jodrell Bank Lovell Telescope

Join the University’s Professor of Astrophysics and Associate Director Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, Tim O’Brien on a journey as he tells the story of how developments in technology helped us to understand our place in the universe.

For thousands of years, we’ve looked to the skies and wondered about the universe.

Four hundred years ago we got a clearer view following the invention of the telescope – but still all we knew was what we could see with our eyes.

Fast-forward to 70 years ago, Jodrell Bank played a key role in extending our vision, pioneering the exploration of the invisible universe using radio waves instead of visible light. Our horizons were expanded, revealing previously undreamt of things.

In this talk, Tim will explore how technological developments have helped us understand our place in the universe – one that began almost 14 billion years ago.

Following the talk, a drinks reception for guests will be held from 8pm – 9pm in The Great Hall, Sackville Street Building.

The event is free but booking is essential.
