New bursaries awarded to home postgraduate students

The University has recently made its final allocation of awards under the first year of the Manchester Master’s Bursary Scheme, a new bursary for home postgraduate students from a widening participation background

Overall, 100 awards of £3,000 each have been made. Students who were successful in getting an offer for a place on a master’s course were shortlisted based on widening participation criteria. 271 eligible applications were made for the 100 places, demonstrating the demand for awards of this type for master’s study.

Clive Agnew, Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students and Chair of the Widening Access Working Group, said: “I am delighted that the University has been able to make these awards this year.  It is a further demonstration of the University’s ongoing commitment to widening participation in supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds who otherwise may not have been able to pursue further study, and we look forward to welcoming them in September.”

Stephanie Lee, Head of Widening Participation and Outreach, said: “Increasing access to postgraduate study is an emerging area for widening participation and it is exciting that the University has been able to support master’s students in this way. Though a government loan was introduced last year, it is not enough to cover both fees and living costs, so the Manchester Master’s Bursary supports talented young people to pursue further study, who otherwise may have not been able to progress beyond undergraduate study purely due to financial reasons.”
