02 Jun 2017
Manchester International Festival (MIF) returns from 29 June to 16 July 2017 for the sixth edition of the world’s only biennial of new commissions and special events
As MIF17 Silver Supporters, the University has been allocated eight pairs of free tickets for our staff and you're invited to enter a prize draw to win a pair of tickets for one of the following events:
- Party Skills for the End of the World
Friday, 30 June at 7.30pm
A secret venue
This is a party with a difference. As turmoil and uncertainty sweep the world, you’ll learn the essential skills you’ll need to survive and savour life when everything you’ve taken for granted has gone – from starting a fire and making balloon animals to mixing the perfect Martini and skinning a rabbit.
- New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes
Saturday, 1 July at 8.00pm
Stage one, Old Granada Studios
New Order take over Stage 1 of Manchester’s iconic Old Granada Studios for this special series of intimate shows. The group will be deconstructing, rethinking and rebuilding a wealth of material from throughout their career.
- Fatherland
Monday, 3 July at 7:30pm
Royal Exchange Theatre
Fatherland is a bold, ambitious show about contemporary fatherhood in all its complexities and contradictions. Created by Frantic Assembly’s Scott Graham, Karl Hyde from Underworld and playwright Simon Stephens (Punk Rock, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time).
- The Welcoming Party
Wednesday, 5 July at 7.00pm
1830 Warehouse, Museum of Science and Industry
A family show for everyone aged 8+
A beautiful blend of puppetry, performance, dance and live music for both children and family audiences, The Welcoming Party invites you to think about what it means to feel different and why we should all be proud of who we are.
- Last and First Men
Thursday, 6 July at 7.30pm
The Bridgewater Hall
Last and First Men combines music, film and Tilda Swinton’s elegiac narration into a poetic meditation on memory, loss and the idea of Utopia. The result is a breathtaking requiem for the final human species in civilisation, and you can see and hear it first at MIF17.
- What if Women Ruled the World?
Saturday, 8 July at 8.00pm
Mayfield Depot
This timely and electrifying new art experiment ponders one of contemporary life’s great questions – what if women ruled the world? In a war room, a group of 10 women will be confronted by some of the urgent crises of our time.
- 10,000 Gestures
Friday, 14 July at 8.00pm
Mayfield Depot
For this highly ambitious piece, staged in an atmospheric space, a 25-strong ensemble of dancers will perform, in succession, 10,000 Gestures – none repeated, every one unique. One of Europe’s most daring and exciting choreographers, Boris Charmatz will be opening his newest work at MIF17.
- Cotton Panic!
Saturday, 15 July at 9.00pm
Upper Campfield Market Hall
Cotton Panic! tells the story of the catastrophe that befell the North and its people, all thanks to events that took place thousands of miles away. The show uses a compelling collage of live music, drama, words and film to evoke an era lost to history.
