Celebrating students who make campus life better

University marks 19th Peer Support Awards to thank those who help ‘next generation’
The University celebrated its student mentors, whose work to help the peers following in their footsteps is a shining example of excellent student experience, at the Peer Support awards last night (Thursday, 4 May).
Our Chancellor Lemn Sissay presented the awards at what was our 19th annual celebration of those students who make an outstanding contribution to campus life – and build their own skills in the process.
Here Sam Howard from our Peer Support team explains how the scheme improves the student experience, both for the mentors and their mentees, and why we celebrate them:
Peer Support offers our new students the opportunity to gain support, advice and help with their studies from students who have been at the University for some time, in the same position as them. These ‘older’ students are able to share their experience and volunteer to provide a safe space where students can ask questions at any time throughout the year.
All the schemes are discipline-owned and student-led. By taking responsibility for its own scheme, while accessing central support, a discipline can ensure the scheme effectively meets the needs of students as they are identified by the students who are involved.
For all the students involved, it enhances the quality, quantity and diversity of their learning, involves them as partners in their learning experience, provides further opportunity to develop their intellectual and professional skills, and provides them with a supportive environment to assist their transition to and through Higher Education.
