The Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute (HCRI) is host to a number fascinating and insightful events as part of its Speaker Series in May. They are:
Abuse of Human Rights in Conflict Situations – a Legal Perspective
Wednesday, 10 May at 2pm in Room A2.6, Ellen Wilkinson Building
Bethany Shiner is a qualified solicitor who spent almost four years working at Public Interest Lawyers (PIL) on human rights and public law cases challenging executive decisions, actions or failures. At PIL Bethany mainly worked on the Iraq civilian litigation cases within a small team representing clients who made serious allegations of torture, ill-treatment and unlawful killings. Bethany also worked on two communications submitted to the International Criminal Court (ICC) detailing detainee abuse in Iraq by British forces in 2003-2008. The communications demonstrate systematic abuse and allege that war crimes were committed for which those with the greatest responsibility must be held accountable. This work resulted in a historic decision when the ICC initiated a preliminary examination of the UK.

This multidisciplinary conference will bring together researchers and students from across the University with a shared interest in issues such as humanitarianism, conflict response and development, and in doing so will provide an opportunity for students and researchers alike to share their skills, knowledge and research projects.
This student-led symposium will present innovative research from multiple perspectives and provide a fantastic opportunity for both emerging and established academics to showcase their ideas and build multidisciplinary networks.

Histories of Humanitarian Action (closing event)
Friday, 19 May – 5.30pm Kanaris Lecture Theatre, Manchester Museum
This HCRI Event brings together three authors who have recently published works on the history of humanitarian action. They are Martin Barber, former UN Official, speaking about his book "Blinded by Humanity: inside the UN's Humanitarian Operations" (2015); Eleanor Davey, HCRI academic, speaking about her book “Idealism beyond Borders: The French Revolutionary Left and the Rise of Humanitarianism, 1954-1988” (2015); and Jean-Herve Bradol, MSF, speaking about his and Marc le Pape’s book “Humanitarian aid, genocide and mass killings” (2016). Each author will use their book to reflect on historical moments in the humanitarian field and promote discussion on the lessons that can be learned for current and future humanitarian practice.
