Africa computer science project seeks crowdfunding support

The School of Computer Science is running a pilot project teaching computing in African schools this summer

Through co-operation with charity Ripple Africa, the School is aiming to take computer education to schools in a remote area of Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world. 

The outreach team, involving staff, students and UK school teachers, will use the highly successful model of teaching teachers, and bringing exciting activities to schoolchildren. They also intend to visit Malawian universities during their stay to help foster links.  

The project involves at least three secondary schools, with primary schools also expected to join the project.  

Project Malawi Co-ordinator Karen Corless said: "This outreach to Malawi is run as a charitable activity, and we are seeking crowdfunding to enable it to get off the ground and to support the educational charity in Africa which is hosting us.

"We would very much appreciate contributions as some aspects of this initiative are proving difficult to fund, and we could make an amazing difference improving the skills and prospects of teachers and children in Malawi."
