Acting US Ambassador to the UK visits campus

Lewis Lukens looks at graphene research and discusses US-UK relationship with staff and students

The Acting Ambassador at the US Embassy in the UK Lewis Lukens discussed links between our University and the States when he visited campus this week.

Mr Lukens also delivered a presentation to students and staff from American Studies and American scholarship holders on the special relationship between the US and the UK.

And he got an insight into our graphene research as Professor Sir Andre Geim escorted him on a tour of the National Graphene Institute clean rooms and NGI Director Professor Vladimir Falko and NGI Business Director James Baker briefed him on the wonder material’s applications.

Mr Lukens was welcomed by President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell and Professor Keith Brown, Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Chair of the University’s North America Group.

Professor Brown said: “Mr Lukens’ visit to the University was a great opportunity to showcase some of our important work, such as graphene, and for some of our students to hear his thoughts on the relationship between the US and the UK. The US remains a strategic priority for the University and building strong collaborations with universities there is a key focus of our activities.”
